Learning and Teaching
READING: We are learning to:
Further develop our fluency and expression to add interest to our reading. We are realising the importance of correct phrasing - if we pause in the wrong place or read on through a full stop the whole meaning of a sentence can change. We are also continuing to develop our comprehension skills by discussing what we have read and posing and answering questions.
WRITING: We are learning to:
Further develop the depth of our writing. We are continuing to learn to reread and edit to improve our writing - have we missed any words, are the sentences too long, are the high frequency words spelt correctly, have we used punctuation?
Over the next week or so the children will be being encouraged to write creatively about Christmas, including Santa's adventures, naughty elves, missing presents and cheeky reindeers.
MATHS: We are learning to:
Understand the concept of sharing. The children have been using concrete materials to share a number of objects between a number of circles. For example, how many apples would each child get if you were to share 12 apples between 2, 3 and 4 children? What if we were to share them between 5 people? How do we share? Is that fair? What happens if it isn't fair? How does a child share - by 1s, 2s, groups or are they using a known fact?
Grandparents' Afternoon
What a wonderful afternoon was had by all last Thursday as much loved Grandparents and the children's 'Special People' paid the preps a visit! The children were thrilled to show off their beautiful work including their family trees and timelines, share stories, play games and sing songs.
Earlier in the week the children made some delicious Anzac slice which was presented to their family or friends. From all reports, everyone enjoyed these tasty treats.
Prep Transition - Tabloid Games
Last week was an incredibly busy and fun-filled week! It seems unbelievable that we have got to the time of year when our current prep children welcome next year's prep children to school. Along with the Grade 5s, the prep children helped the 'kinder kids' feel happy and secure as they participated in fun and games including the parachute game, accuracy throw, quoits, rebound net/ball throwing and wombats (ask your children what these are!).
A huge thank you to all the parent helpers who cooked and served sausages, icy poles and organised tea and coffee for the kinder children's parents.
Performing for the Minister of Education, Mr James Merlino
The Minister of Education, Mr James Merlino, paid a visit to our school on Tuesday to view the new works, watch a Grade 5/6 performance of STOMP and tour the remainder of the school. The prep children were very excited to perform 2 songs; Mr Clickety Cane and Rudolph, and the Minister and his entourage were equally excited by the children's wonderful performance. The children sang and smiled their way through the songs and then answered Mr Merlino's questions. They all shared their favourite thing about school - Music, Maths and STOMP featured prominently - whilst one child, possibly a politician in the making, answered - the new building!
As always, we were incredibly proud of the children's performance and faultless manners.
Annual 'a-thon'
Another huge thank you for supporting the children, and our school, through donations to the Walk-a-thon. The response has been amazing! Congratulations to all our enthusiastic 'Prep Walkers'. Another HUGE thankyou to all members of our school community for helping us raise over $4,000!
Reminder - Don't Miss Our Christmas Carols - 2nd December 6:00 - 8:00pm
The children are looking forward to this spectacular evening! Not only will the prep children be performing a 'Christmas Classic' but they will also be presenting a dance they are learning in Stomp. (Stomp is a dance program that the children are currently participating in on a Tuesday afternoon where they are having a lot of fun as they learn the steps to several dances.)
Mark it on your calendars - BYO dinner and picnic rug and enjoy the company of your family and friends.
All year levels will be performing!

Helping Others - Dixon House Christmas Donations
Every year we collect gifts for Christmas for families and children. We are now collecting NEW TOYS and FOOD ITEMS for families.
The focus this year is toys for Boys and Girls ages 5-12 years. (Please label your toy Boy or Girl and the appropriate age.)
Dixon House has requested no soft toys and please check that food items are in date.
Please place your donations under the Christmas tree near the office before Monday, 5th December.

Icy Poles - Reminder
To raise money for the Grade Six Graduation Ceremony, icy poles will be sold every Tuesday in Term 4 at RECESS only.
School Hats - Reminder
As we are a Sun Smart School it is necessary for all children to wear a school hat in both Term 1 and Term 4. Even if it's an overcast day, the children are required to wear a school hat. If the children do not have a school hat from Week 2 they will be required to remain under the shade cloth in the eating area.
